About the artist

Phillip Toledano draws from a multicultural background and upbringing to create emotive, frequently poignant portraits that encourage the viewer to investigate the image further, leaving space for questions. His photographs make good use of his deep well of creativity, but Phillip also expresses himself in many other media, from installation to sculpture and painting. Regardless of his method of expression, his work often focuses on socio-political and personal themes. He has worked for a wide range of commercial and editorial clients, and has exhibited internationally; most recently, a central exhibition at the Hamburg Triennale 2015.

About the book

Phillip Toledano became a father at the age of forty. He fell in love with his daughter about a year and a half later, when he realized she was the most bewitching human being he'd ever seen. Initially, though, things were different. The Reluctant Father follows Phillip's journey at the beginning of fatherhood. The first eighteen months were a time of torment, dismay, and confusion. The blinding light of unalloyed love came later. It's a surprisingly frank, funny, and moving account, and he hopes his daughter won't hold it against him when she's grown up...
