About the artist

Sven Jacobsen´s photography is distinguished by a strong harkening to simplicity and awareness. Unlike much work nowadays, Jacobsen’s work strives to capture a radical demand to preserve genuine truth. He searches for bliss in the simplest things and is keenly interested in the aesthetics of the moment. In his search, Jacobsen focuses on emotionality, lightness and authenticity. For him, the essence of things is the most important: going back to ones roots, home, embracing imperfections, and spreading warmth and truth. This is what he commonly portrays with his emotional and warm picture language.

About the book

This portrait project is about the area of St. Pauli in Hamburg. As a society, we have access to everything and anything we could want, whenever we want it - to the point that we are beginning to lose our personal identities. People have changed from free, creative, playful kids to consumers. They consume and act on anything that comes to mind. Just a few things are still unique, and that's why I picked the people I shot for this book; its shows me that these personal icons are still existing. I am always drawn to extraordinary, interesting, different characters who portray their own distinct and unique beauty apart from expected societal norms. I chose the ones here because I had the feeling that they stand for something; they have an opinion and live truly and authentically on their own terms. They seem to be unswayed by anything hip happening, instead, their strong personality shines through. For this book, I captured people on the streets against a white background for a timeless feel but also for a lack of distractions apart from the subject matter.
