About the artist

Fashion and documentary photography have always intrigued and guided Fabienne Karmann. Her work aims to combine the language of fashion photography with a piece of reality. “Les femmes du Maroc”, her latest work, provided the missing link to what she has been searching for the last few years: a sense of fashion grounded in reality and with a strong social meaning. Karmann employs the techniques of fashion photography in a natural setting, putting her models on stage in their daily life. At the same time, she uses documentary language to inform about social relations. Before setting out on her own, Karmann studied photography at the University of Applied Sciences Bielefeld and the Moholy Nagy university in Budapest, later interning at the Room Magazine and assisting photographers such as Marton Perlaki, Stefan Milev, Daniel Gieseke, and Jan Kopetzky.

About the book

Along the road colorful, floating, strolling points catch your sight. Women are seen as minority on Moroccan streets. But if you meet them, their dressing is the opposite of men's cloths, experimental and distinctive. Their fashionable presence opens a space for identity, individuality and valence. It's street fashion. In Morocco. Colorful camouflage and veiling for diverse reasons. Shape, femininity and strength. With and without showing the face. Using a combination of fashion and documentary photography gives these women significance. Placed in the foreground and presented on their deserved stage, finally. In the last years, the state of Morocco has advanced in women's rights and emancipation. However, there is still a lot to do in the legal system of women rights: opening minds, decreasing violence, creating equal rights and independence.
