About the artist

Fashion and documentary photography have always intrigued and guided Fabienne Karmann. Her work aims to combine the language of fashion photography with a piece of reality. “Les femmes du Maroc”, her latest work, provided the missing link to what she has been searching for the last few years: a sense of fashion grounded in reality and with a strong social meaning. Karmann employs the techniques of fashion photography in a natural setting, putting her models on stage in their daily life. At the same time, she uses documentary language to inform about social relations. Before setting out on her own, Karmann studied photography at the University of Applied Sciences Bielefeld and the Moholy Nagy university in Budapest, later interning at the Room Magazine and assisting photographers such as Marton Perlaki, Stefan Milev, Daniel Gieseke, and Jan Kopetzky.

About the book

Hada Madrina is a self-governing, volunteer-only afterschool community center in the small fishing village Jiquilillo in Nicaragua. Before its establishment, local children had to organize their afternoons by themselves. Hada Madrina has, among other things, a library in a house of bamboo, a big playground, a slackline, and a skate pool, all opening up space to unfold childrens' creativity. Meanwhile, the DIY skatepark of Pura Vida is located in one of the poorest areas of Costa Rica, San Isidro El General. In here, youth work is practiced through the medium of skateboarding. The magic of the wooden board allows children to jump over their frontiers every day. Karmann captures the excitement, energy, and life of the youths at both establishments. Her work is fresh and full of vigor.
