About the artist

Martin Klimas has worked as a freelance photographer in Düsseldorf, Germany since 1999. He specializes in high-speed photography, creating unique and memorable scenes using his own proprietary setup. These intimate moments - a hair's breadth of time - are captured with amazing detail and color, despite their short lives. Martin has recently gravitated towards a synesthesia of sorts - he visualizes sound in many forms, from pure tones to songs, and in doing so, allows a peek into what Nabokov, Ellington, and many other artists have experienced. In addition to a series of fine art exhibitions, he has won numerous awards and widespread recognition. He has a fine balance between dynamism and consistency with which he exploits the creative potential of digital photography.

About the book

Flawlessly arranged flower vases are shot by steel balls and captured at the moment of their destruction. When hit by the projectiles, glass vases shatter, and ceramic and stoneware vases burst into large fragments. What interests Klimas is not so much the moment of impact as the transformation taking place in one seven-thousandth of a second. While the top half of the photograph remains poised in an absolutely harmonious still life, utter chaos has erupted below. The contrast of motionlessness and top speed explodes the triteness of the subject. The simultaneous presence of two distinct states and the improbable serenity of the pictures are positively spellbinding.
